About Asbestos
Brief on Asbestos Material.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once lauded for its versatility, recognized for its heat resistance, tensile strength and insulating properties. It was used for various applications from fire-proof vests to home and commercial construction. It was woven into fabric and mixed with cement to manufacture roofing sheets. Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) were used as the roofing material of choice in the 1960s and 1970s in Kenya and thousands of tons are still in place.
In 2006, NEMA declared ACMs as hazardous waste. The material must not be re-used, recovered, recycled or offered for sale. In addition, in November 2016 NEMA directed that all asbestos roofs that are worn out, broken or dilapidated be removed and that no rain water should be collected even from those roofs that are not worn out.
Due to deterioration through weather, disturbance or damage, asbestos material can become a danger to health because of the release of asbestos fibres into the air where people may breathe them in. Air borne asbestos fibres are invisible to the naked eye and may enter the human body through inhalation and lodge in the lungs. Inhaled in high concentrations over an extended period of time may result in accumulation in the lungs where they can impair normal lung functions and increase the risk of developing lung cancer, mesothelioma or asbestosis.
The universally accepted disposal method for asbestos waste is landfilling. NEMA directs that asbestos material must be disposed into a NEMA licensed asbestos disposal landfill. NEMA has also developed the National Guidelines on Safe Management and Disposal of asbestos to guide the process of safe management and disposal of the asbestos material.
